Malacañang has declared Wednesday, April 2, 2025, a special non-working holiday in the province of Bataan to commemorate the birth anniversary of renowned Filipino poet and orator Francisco “Balagtas” Baltazar.
Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin, by the authority of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., signed Proclamation No. 8.30 on March 13, 2025, granting the holiday to allow Bataeños to honor Balagtas’ contributions to Philippine literature and culture. Baltazar, widely regarded as the “Prince of Tagalog Poetry,” was born on April 2, 1788, in Bigaa, Bulacan (now Balagtas, Bulacan). His most famous work, Florante at Laura, remains a cornerstone of Filipino literature and a symbol of national identity.
“The proclamation recognizes the significance of Francisco ‘Balagtas’ Baltazar’s literary legacy and ensures that the people of Bataan have the opportunity to celebrate his impact on Filipino heritage,” the declaration stated. With the holiday in place, government offices and private establishments in Bataan will observe the non-working status, allowing residents to participate in cultural events, educational activities, and tributes to the literary icon.
Balagtas’ legacy continues to inspire Filipinos, particularly in the fields of poetry and literature, as his works highlight themes of patriotism, justice, and love for the Filipino language.
